Larger urban areas with industrial discharges can cause pollution through effluent discharges and can alter the temperature of the watercourse. In rural areas, a proliferation of single dwellings with septic tanks can also lead to pollution issues, particularly if the tanks aren’t maintained properly. Many of these applications are associated with domestic dwellings and involve a discharge to a watercourse or to the underground stratum.
