SWELL

SWELL

The €35 million Shared Waters Enhancement & Loughs Legacy (SWELL) project, funded by the EU, is dedicated to enhancing water quality in Carlingford Lough and Lough Foyle by upgrading wastewater assets on both sides of the border.

The project brings together NI Water, Irish Water, AFBI, Loughs Agency, and East Border Region in a cross-border partnership. Through the application of best practices, innovation, and knowledge sharing, SWELL aims to leverage engineering excellence, strategic catchment investigation, and modeling to achieve sustainable upgrades to wastewater assets.

The project's noteworthy legacy is the development of a unique ecosystem model that will continue to drive improvements in these shared waters. SWELL aligns with the Interreg VA Programme, aiming for a 'Good' Water Framework Directive classification. The project, managed by the Special EU Programmes Body, marks a collaborative effort for lasting water quality enhancement.
