What is it?

Salmon Ambassadors, a hands-on learning programme for primary schools, immerses pupils in their local river system. Activities and topics include salmon life cycles, migration, conservation, while also highlighting Loughs Agency's role. Inspired by the International Year of the Salmon (2019-2023), the programme supports salmon research and conservation across the northern hemisphere.

The initiative has several key goals. Firstly, it aims to connect children with their local river habitats by using the salmon life cycle to teach broader themes of biodiversity and ecology. Secondly, it seeks to inform and educate within the Foyle and Carlingford catchments about the Atlantic salmon's challenges from local to global levels. Additionally, the programme strives to create valuable learning experiences both in the classroom and by the riverside for pupils and staff. It encourages reflection on how our lifestyles impact the local environment and wildlife. Lastly, it aims to foster a sense of ownership of wild spaces, promoting conservation for the benefit of future generations.

Who is it for?

The programme is open to primary schools within the Foyle and Carlingford catchments.
