Survey Work

Survey Work

Sections 69 of the Foyle Fisheries Act (Northern Ireland) 1952 and 70 of the Foyle Fisheries Act 1952 provide exemptions for acts done for artificial propagation, scientific purposes or improvement of fisheries.

Loughs Agency may, by written permit, authorise any named person to do specified things for the artificial propagation of salmon or freshwater fish, scientific research or the improvement of fisheries.

A Section 69/70 permit authorises the holder to carry out activities which would normally be illegal. These include catching salmon or trout by electrofishing for supportive breeding programmes, and catching freshwater fish by an approved method for transferring between fisheries.

In issuing the permit, we must be sure that the purpose it’s required for conforms to current scientific advice and good fisheries management practice. We also need to know that the authorised persons are competent. It is important, therefore, that the applicant provides as much detail as possible so that the application can be assessed properly.

Applications for Section 69/70 Survey Permits MUST be received 28 working days before the start date of the operation.

A record of all activities and results under the permit’s authority MUST be shared with Loughs Agency within one month of the permit’s expiry.
