The Foyle

Season: 1st March  – 15th September

The Foyle is a large tidal spate river that varies between 50m and 100m wide, which flows into the sea through the lough bearing the same name. For the majority of it's length, from the confluence with the Finn to where it enters the sea downstream of the bustling city of Derry~Londonderry it forms the boundary between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. Although mainly known for the commercial salmon fishing that was carried out on it in the past little angling effort is made on it compared to it's tributaries. On it's upper reaches there is always the chance to intercept a salmon, whilst in it's lower reaches where the water turns brackish there are shoals of mullet and flatfish feeding over it's silt and sand bed. The entire Foyle river is catch and release only. Only barbless single hooks are permitted. Please note that whilst every attempt has been made to ensure the accuracy of angling club and associations boundaries it is essential you consult the club or association to confirm their upper and lower limits.
