Enforcement

Loughs Agency Fishery Officers carry out regular patrols on land and water. Where regulations are infringed, prosecutions may follow. The Agency checks that all vessels operate within the regulations, and carries out monitoring to ensure that:

  • vessels fishing are licensed accordingly
  • vessels only fish during the designated open periods
  • dredges used are compliant
  • vessel logbooks are filled in and signed appropriately
  • all oyster bags are correctly tagged
  • oysters landed are at, or above, the 80mm Minimum Landing Size
  • oysters are only landed at designated piers.

Failure to comply with the regulations can lead to seizure of any shellfish landed, caution and prosecution.
