Threat: Threatens ecosystem and protected species

Description

  • hair-like ‘mitten’ on distinctive white-tipped claws.

Information

  • burrows into banks to live as it migrates upstream
  • feeds on invertebrates and fish
  • known to sometimes carry the parasite lung fluke which can be harmful to humans.

Consequence

  • where present in large numbers, they can harm native fish populations
  • can cause subsidence of river banks.
