Underwater Imagery

The Agency uses a variety of techniques to survey wild shellfish and farmed shellfish in Lough Foyle and Carlingford Lough. These include dredge sampling and grab sampling for stock assessments, electronic seabed mapping equipment, deployment of water quality sensors and also the use of underwater video cameras.

The underwater video is particularly useful to determine the exact location of mussel and oyster beds and to build a historical database of imagery from the oyster beds to compare with future conditions.

The Agency surveys shellfish beds using an underwater video mounted on a sled that slides along the seabed as well as using a remotely operated vehicle which has an internal video camera and can be driven like a submarine above the seabed collecting images.
