Train Journey – one of the BBC Great Railway Journeys!

One of Michael Palin’s Great Railway Journeys of the World runs by the Foyle!
The railway journey between Derry-Londonderry and Coleraine is one of Michael Palin’s Great Railway Journeys of the World!
Leaving the walled city of Derry, the line hugs the River Foyle, passing the busy commercial harbour at the mouth of the river to then stride across the reclaimed flat lands that bound much of the eastern side of Lough Foyle. In places, the line edges mudflat backed by salt marsh – watch out for waders and wildfowl feeding and roosting here, especially in winter time.
Near Downhill at the eastern extremity of the nine miles of sandy beach at Benone, the Victorian railway engineers had to blast two tunnels through basalt headlands to allow the line to pass in to the Bann valley.
