Inishowen, Foyle
The spectacular coast of northern Inishowen, studded with islets and rocky reefs, has claimed many ships through the centuries.
One of the more famous wrecks was discovered in 1971 by the City of Derry Sub-aqua Club. This was the Trinidad Valencera, a 1,100 ton warship, the fourth largest ship in the Spanish Armada. She sank in Kinnagoe Bay, west of Inishowen Head, on 14 September 1588. Many of the artefacts recovered from the wreck are on display in the Tower Museum in the walled city of Londonderry.
Wrecks along this Atlantic shore include naval battle ships, merchant vessels, submarines and other types of vessels.
There is also good diving to view the fish and other creatures that inhabit this stretch of coast, thriving in a variety of habitat - plunging walls, coves, sand beds, reefs and coves, as well as the shelter of the wrecks!

Carlingford Lough
There are many wrecks recorded in the lough. Local divers warn that care must be taken because of currents. The lough and the waters at its mouth support a rich variety of fish and there are good opportunities for shore diving and boat diving.
Safety
As with any outdoor activity, always carry out thorough planning before your trip, put a safety plan in place and wear and carry appropriate safety equipment.
• Lough Foyle and Carlingford Lough are wide, open stretches of water traversed by commercial shipping and other leisure users. There is a strong current and sea conditions can change rapidly!
In the event of an emergency call 999 and ask for Police or Coastguard.
