Recent Pollution Prosecution

At a sitting of Omagh Magistrates Court on the 10th November 2017, Mr David Matthews of Beltany Road, Omagh, was fined for causing deleterious matter to enter the Poe Burn, a tributary of the River Strule, on the 27th March 2017. Fishery Officers from the Loughs Agency were on site to investigate the pollution which had run from the farm across the A5 road causing disruption to local traffic, and then entering the Poe Burn where it caused damage to fish populations in that burn. The Fishery Officers of the Loughs Agency worked with Mr Matthews to prevent the polluting material from entering the main River Strule. District Judge Reeghan fined the defendant £350 for causing pollution, and ordered him to pay costs of £250, Court Costs of £38, and an offenders levy of £15.
