Northern Ireland mens team win the XVIII Commonwealth Fly Fishing Championships

 

Loughs Agency are delighted to announce the results of the XVIII Commonwealth Fly-Fishing Championships 2018, which took place in Omagh, Northern Ireland. This competition was organised by the Trout Angling Federation of Ireland and supported by Fermanagh & Omagh District Council, DAERA Inland Fisheries and Loughs Agency.

Loughs Agency were delighted to support this event through habitat and access improvements on the official competition waters – Dennett, Quiggery and Loughmacrory as well as providing assistance with transporting competitors to the official venues, biosecurity, conference symposium, school engagement and promotion of the championships.

Northern Ireland Men took the honours after five very competitive fly-fishing sessions held in Omagh, Co Tyrone from 2nd to 8th September 2018. Second placed team was Canada White and third place honours went to Scotland Men.

The TAFI International Organiser and Northern Ireland Team Captain, Alan McDade said, “A year of dedicated practice, great team spirit and determination to win, got us our first ever Commonwealth Gold medal in this competition. Northern Ireland should be proud of this team.”

Brian Kerr from Armagh took the Individual Trophy as Top Angler, with Campbell Baird from Carrickfergus in second place and Brett Van Rensburg of South Africa in third place.

 Accepting the Individual Award and as the first ever recipient of the Loughs Agency Perpetual trophy, Brian Kerr said, “I am delighted to be receiving this Loughs Agency Trophy in this competition. It was a great competition and I was up against some of the best anglers in the world, I am really pleased.”

The South African ladies team also won the ‘Friendliest team’.
