Loughs Agency encourages membership of local water based clubs and associations at Foyle Maritime Festival

Loughs Agency have been a key partner in the Foyle Maritime Festival and driver of the on the water activity taking place over the maritime event.  The programme included sailing, canoeing, curraghs, rowing, angling, river tours to mention a few.   The Agency have engaged with local clubs and associations to put on a programme of activity that ensures the visitors and locals have the opportunity to access and experience the Foyle from a different perspective, or for the first time!

John Pollock, Chief Executive at Loughs Agency said ‘we want to showcase the recreation potential of the River Foyle at this international event.  We wanted to signpost to the public the existing clubs and associations such as Foyle Sailability, Foyle Paddlers, City of Derry Boating Club, Moville Boat Club, Lough Foyle Yacht Club who are eager to welcome new members.   Through the services of these clubs, supported by the Loughs Agency, over 1,000 taster sessions have been delivered during the festival and we hope that it has inspired people to consider taking up a new water based sport or hobby’.

Kevin Wilson, Director of Development said ‘sailing, rowing, canoeing and other water based sports and activities can provide an opportunity to relax, exercise or even take it to a competitive level.  These clubs and associations, based on our own doorstep, have a great social aspect to them as well and I’d encourage anyone who is interested to get in touch with them directly or Loughs Agency to find out more.’

The Foyle Maritime Festival has been a wonderful opportunity demonstrate the capacity that the Foyle has to organise and host maritime events on an international scale.  The events were brought to life by the vibrant and energetic people of the City and surrounding areas and the Loughs Agency would like to thanks everyone involved, particularly those at Derry City and Strabane District Council, Foyle Port and Clipper, not to mention all the volunteers including our own Foyle Ambassadors who helped make the event such as great success.
