Kite surf and sand buggy

Benone (pronounced “Ben Own”), sometimes known as Magilligan Strand, has become something of a centre for kite sports. It is near Limavady and close to the Magilligan side of the Foyle Ferry crossing.

At Benone there are toilet facilities at this Blue Flag beach and usually (in the summer holiday season) a life guard post. There is camping and caravanning nearby and a hostel at the Downhill end of the beach.

Benone Beach

As with any outdoor activity, always carry out thorough planning before your trip, put a safety plan in place and wear and carry appropriate safety equipment.

In the event of an emergency go to the lifeguard (if on duty) or call 999 and ask for Police.

Kite Surfing

Kite surfers prefer wide, sandy beaches for their sport, ideally with an onshore wind. Benone is sometimes billed as the “centre of kite surfing in the north”.

Kite Buggy

Kite buggying is a thrilling sport where the rider sits in a canvas seat suspended in a metal frame, propelled along inches from the ground in an exhilarating ride, powered by the wind captured in a canvas kite steered by guide ropes.

Benone is seven miles (eleven kilometres) long, a broad, smooth, sandy beach that is reckoned to be best for buggying in a northerly wind.
