Kayak and Canoe

The waters of both the Foyle and Carlingford catchments and sea areas offer the paddler plenty of scope for pursuing their sport – sea kayak, expedition, touring, surf… and even whitewater on the rivers!

The waters of both the Foyle and Carlingford catchments offer the paddler plenty of scope for pursuing their sport:-

  • sea kayaking on Lough Foyle or Carlingford Lough and Atlantic along the coastline of Inishowen and Benone Beach
  • kayak surfing at Benone and Culdaff
  • touring along the slower sections of the rivers that make up the Foyle system
  • tackling white water on the renowned Glenelly, Derg, Owenkillew or Mourne rivers (part of the Foyle system) or the aptly named Whitewater River that flows into Carlingford Lough
  • exploring the Newry Ship Canal
  • flat water canoeing on a lake
  • training and developing skills with one of the providers, many of which will also hire equipment and act as guides

Some of the more popular canoeing waters have canoe steps, while at other places access is from the bank, beach, slipway or quay.

The Loughs Agency has developed three canoe trails: the East Inishowen Sea Kayak Trail and, working with CAAN, the Foyle Canoe Trail and the South East Canoe Trail.
