Free Science Open Day at Loughs Agency – Friday 16th Feb 2018 10 – 4pm

Date: 09/02/2018

As part of the Northern Ireland Science Festival, Loughs Agency will be hosting a Science Open Day event at its headquarters in Prehen on Friday 16th February from 10am to 4pm.  The event will showcase the scientific work undertaken at Loughs Agency across the freshwater and marine environments of the Foyle and Carlingford catchments.

The newly refurbished Riverwatch Visitor Centre will be open and there will be guided tours of the building and an opportunity to meet with some of the Agency’s Scientists. Guided tours can be booked on the day (subject to availability).  Throughout the day in the visitor centre, there will be mini-marine discovery tanks to learn more about local sea life.

As part of the event, Angling Coaches will be delivering angling taster sessions on the fishing ponds. Each session lasts half an hour and will give the participants a chance to earn their CAST Angling Starter certificate. Whilst the angling is happening on the pond, fly tyers will demonstrate how they tie flies to match some of the invertebrate (water bugs) that live underwater and there will be live samples for visitors to view under the microscope.

Weather permitting, there will be on the water experiences with canoe trips on the River Foyle. These canoe safaris will allow participants to see some of the wildlife that inhabit our great waterway and an opportunity to see how deep and fast the river is at various points.  Booking is essential for both the angling and canoe experiences (limited availability) and is available through the Loughs Agency website and Eventbrite pages.
