Foyle Marina – city centre pontoon and quay

Foyle Marina Development

News: Best Tourism Initiative 2013

The Loughs Agency, in partnership with Foyle Port, are delighted to have won ‘Best Tourism Initiative’ in the 2013 Londonderry Chamber of Commerce Business Awards.

The official opening of the Foyle Marina took place on Friday 23rd November 2012. The Marina was opened by Mr Paul Brush head of DETI’s European Support. Other speakers at the event included Tarlach O Crosain – Loughs Agency, Mr Brian McGrath – Chief executive of Foyle Port, Lorraine McCourt – SEUPB and Sam Parker – Clipper Ventures.

This project is an amalgam of two elements – the Marine Event Platform (or pontoon) and City Centre Cruise Ship Berth. Working in partnership with the Loughs Agency, Londonderry Port and Harbour Commissioners completed these two elements on the River Foyle in the centre of Derry in June 2012.

Ø Cruise Ship Berth at Meadowbank Quay

So far, this quay has accommodated cruise vessels, tall ships, naval vessels and scientific survey vessels. Project works included mooring bollards and fenders plus modification to riverside barrier fence to facilitate the landing of gangways.

Ø Marine Event Platform at Baronet Street

This 140 metre pontoon provides visitor moorings and facilities for vessels such as small cruise ships, tall ships, naval boats, traditional craft and visiting yachts.

The pontoon has proven a catalyst for the development of marine tourism along the Foyle – for instance, hosting the Clipper Round the World yacht race!
