Foyle Ambassadors – an action packed week of adventure!

Last week Loughs Agency ran a 5 day Foyle Ambassador programme for 14-17 year olds.  The programme is designed to connect young people with their local waterways, coastline and wildlife through recreation, volunteering and conservation opportunities.

What a week our latest Foyle Ambassadors had! On Monday they began their week raft building in Creggan Country in close to Artic conditions! The following day they spent a day learning to fish in Ballyheather Trout Fishery, catching and releasing 14 fish!

On Wednesday they had a guided tour around Foyle Port and saw massive Chinese ship full of South American grain being unloaded.

They did their bit for the environment on Thursday by doing a litter pick on the banks of the Foyle where they collected over 10 bags full of rubbish.

Their action packed week finished in style on a beautiful Good Friday on Benone beach trying their hand at Stand Up Paddle boarding with Longline Surf School.

Allan Bogle, Community Engagement Officer at Loughs Agency said “throughout the week we encouraged our Ambassadors to discover more, explore more, conserve more and share more using the John Muir Discovery Award.  Ambassadors do not only build lasting connections with wild places, they also build lasting friendships with people from different backgrounds. The experiences they gain provides them with skills for life through fun, friendship and adventure.

Loughs Agency believe that our Ambassadors Programme has the potential to reach many more young people, creating stronger communities and inspiring everyone to love our waterways.
We are currently recruiting for the next programme which will run on Wednesday evenings and Saturdays.  Click this link for more information.

Speaking about the course one of last year’s Maritime Ambassador’s Terrence Kelly said ‘the highlight for me was the coaching.  Also the journeys we took paddling along the beautiful Inishowen coastline and fishing from the canoes’.   Terrence would encourage others to join the programme which runs three times a year.  ‘It’s a great opportunity.  I’d do it again tomorrow if I could.  It’s good craic and I’m hoping the assistant coaching qualification will open up new employment opportunities for me!  You get well looked after and plenty of support’ said Terrence.

One ambassador, Scott Robinson was recognized for his hard work and contributions to the programme, receiving the Phillip Gent Memorial Cup, in memory of a participant who had taken part in the first course and had displayed all the attributes and positive attitude needed to succeed in the sector.

Community Engagement Officer Rosemary McCloskey at Loughs Agency said, ‘this programme aims to develop the skills, knowledge and qualifications of local people to become Maritime Ambassadors.  The hope is that they will use the experience to pursue employment or volunteer opportunities linked to their new qualifications.  The Foyle, its tributaries, estuary and the local coast are a great resource and provide a stunning landscape for new businesses and recreational hobbies to blossom.’

The next course starts on the 8th of August and is free of charge to anyone unemployed, not in education or training and living within the Derry and Strabane District Council area.  If you are interested and would like to register please contact either Rosemary McCloskey at Loughs Agency, 02871 342100 or Geraldine O’hEara at Derry City and Strabane District Council, 02871 308466.
