Higher Scientific Officer

Salary Scale

£29,317 to £31,446 pa         Fixed Term Contract (to August 2022, subject to funding)

Purpose of the role

The Loughs Agency will be investigating the ecosystem / water quality issues on the River Finn in Co. Donegal and will be lead on the Work Package Implementing Catchment Actions across the three areas (Finn, Blackwater and Arney) following the Scoping Exercise led by Inland Fisheries Ireland. The post holder will be responsible for day to day running of the Loughs Agency elements of the Catchment CARE project.  They will be expected to liaise with project partners in the standardisation of techniques across the three catchments and be responsible for the line management of the hydromorphologist who will be working on the delivery of instream and riparian works. The post holder will be required to identify a series of matched issues and locations within specified catchments where water quality measures could be put in place in order to improve the current status.

Essential Criteria

Applicants must demonstrate that they possess the following criteria, by the closing date for applications:

  1. An Honors Degree or equivalent in a relevant environmental area and 2 years’ experience of handling data and interpreting Results
  2. Experience of working on projects in the environmental area (2 years)
  3. Staff supervision
  4. A proven ability in, and experience of managing resources.
  5. A full and current driving licence that enables the holder to drive in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland (held for at least 2 years and no more than 6 penalty points).

Desirable Criteria

In addition applicants should be aware that after an eligibility sift, should it be necessary to shortlist candidates to go forward to interview, the following desirable criteria will be used.

  1. Experience of working with water chemistry analysis (6 months in last 5 years).
  2. Experience of using macro-invertebrates as indicators in the environmental area (6 months in last 5 years).
  3. Experience of instream / riparian works (6 months in last 5 years).
  4. Post-graduate environmentally based Masters Degree or PhD.
  5. Experience of dealing with stakeholders.

Summer Scheme Placements

Student Work Placements

Salary Scale: £4.20 to £7.38 p/h (minimum wage) (4/5 posts available)

Purpose of the Role

The purpose of the role is to assist full time staff in their day to day tasks where possible. The work placement Students will be assigned a mentor to guide them through specific tasks in various work areas within the Loughs Agency remit. This could involve anything from filing to fishing, touch tank to testing water quality, planning applications to planting trees. The tasks may be rotated to allow placements to gain a wide variety of experience through working in different environments within the Loughs Agency. Although the placement is for 12 weeks this is flexible and can be adjusted for the successful candidates to a maximum of 17 weeks.

Essential Criteria

  • 5 GCSEs (Grade A-C) or equivalent including Maths, English language one Science subject,
  • Candidates must be in full time education either
    • Secondary school – post GCSE.
    • Third level education
  • Demonstrate an interest in one of the following areas
    • Marine/Fishery Science
    • Environmental Science
    • Administration/IT Areas
    • Marine Tourism
    • Conservation
  • Have basic IT skills, good communication skills, be flexible & willing to learn.

Desirable Criteria

  •  Experience of working in a team
  • Ability to comply with rules/regulations
  • Experience in taking instruction
