The Loughs Agency hosted its annual Angling Fair on the weekend of Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th April 2010 at a new location - on the banks of the River Strule at the Newtownstewart Playing Fields, Co Tyrone.

The fair attracted almost 5000 visitors over the weekend and had a wide range of angling demonstrations, competitions and events for all ages. Unfortunately many of the overseas personalities from countries including USA, Germany, and Holland were unable to attend due to the grounding of planes as a result of the volcanic dust cloud. Nevertheless, those who attended it deemed the event, held on the banks of the River Strule a great success.

The world record in fly-fishing Speycasting was broken at the Loughs Agency Angling Fair by Irishman Gerard Downey from Foxford, Co Mayo. Downey achieved the massive 222.4ft cast on a special purpose-built casting pool constructed for the competition, breaking his existing record and winning him the first prize of £1000.

Peter Kealey said 'As one of the fly tiers at the show I would have to say that this fair has been one of the best to date, the location was truly superb and the facilities and catering provided by both the local GAA and Rugby Clubs were excellent. Well done Ladies and Gents.

As with every show there are always the teething problems with the first day. For us this year the volcano in Iceland depleted the fly tiers rows of both Americans, the Dutch and UK Mainland tiers a grand total of 10. This was a big loss to the show but thankfully a few phone calls resulted in some adequate substitutes from Forum members. A big thank you to them.

Well done to the Loughs Agency staff who have worked tirelessly on the run up to the event and all through the event and even today have been litter picking. It is an event that I always look forward to but always wonder can it be improved upon?

Our designated charity for the event, RNLI raised over £1200 and would like to thank the many kind people who donated and purchased RNLI merchandise.
