On Saturday, the River Foyle flourished with the Foyle Flotilla! Craft powered by sail, paddle, oar and engine ventured on to the river – 36 boats in all, carrying 66 crew from 9 clubs.
Under the control of Captain Seamus Bovaird, the fleet manoeuvred around the broad sweep of the Foyle. Locals and visitors on the quays were told about the Foyle’s boat clubs by Greencastle boat builder Brian McDonald (commentary delivered over a riverside PA system).
The Loughs Agency organised the Flotilla in partnership with local clubs. Their aim was to showcase the many opportunities for local people to get on to their river and lough (clubs are based along the waterfront from Prehen to the Marina to Culmore to Moville to Greencastle).
All the clubs taking part welcome new members and offer a taster session where prospective recruits can try out the sport before joining! For more information email Andy Sides at the Loughs Agency (email email@example.com ).
Clubs participating included City of Derry Boat Club, Foyle Paddlers Canoe Club, Driftwood Canoe Club, Lough Foyle Yacht Club, Moville Boat Club, Foyle Rowing Club, Foyle Sailability, Moville Sea Scouts and the Currach Club.
